Getting There
There are several flights a day from Athens. There
are also frequent charter flights from Europe.
There daily ferry links to Sami port from Ithaca,
Patras, and several times a week with Corfu and Italy.
Kefalonia (Argostoli) is also connected with kilini (in
Peloponnese) severals times a day. Fiskardo has connections to
Ithaca and Lefkada, while Ag. Eufimia has connections to Ithaca.
Pessada is connected on a daily basis to Zante and Poros
to Kilini. Hydrofoils run from Poros and Argostoli to Zakynthos.
There is a bus service from Athens 3 times a day.

Getting Around
There is bus
service between Argostoli to Lassi (Platys Yialos), Poros, Sami, Fiskardo.
and to the villages of the south coast. Agia Eufimia, Divarata and Sami
are connected with Fiskardo.

Argostoli and Lixouri are connected with
a frequent ferry. Tour operators also organise boat trips to the beaches.
Cars and motor bikes are available to be hired. Taxis are also available. |

Beaches
Anti Samos
(3 Km south of Sami) with white pebbles lapped by a violet sea. Very
nice beach with crystal clear waters.
Kalamia is the most northerly of Lassi beaches. It has a narrow
stretch of grey sand with a band of fine shingle at the waters edge
but set in small nice bay bounded by white cliffs to the south.
Lepeda is an attractive golden sand beach beach located south
of Lixouri.
Lourdas is a quiet beach with fine silver sand and a little shingle
enclosed by a wide bay.
Myrtos is an excellent beach with white fine sand and shingle nestling
into steep cliffs.
Makrys Yialos is a fine long stretch of golden sand. Is one of
the most popular Kefalonian beaches.
Platys Yialos is very similar to Makrys Yialos with golden sand
but smaller.
St George Cape. 90 minutes walk south from Lixouri there is a
splendid stretch of sand.

Argostoli,
|
|
the capital (since 1759) is superbly set on a thumb of a bay.. Places of interest
include the Koryalenios History and Folklore Museum with Venetian
records of the island, the Archaeological Museum with a room of
Mycenaean finds, coins from the ancient cities of Kefalonia, the Katavothres
swallow holes, the church of Ag. Barbara.

Agia Eufimia,
|
|
is a small ferry port to Ithaca and the mainland Astakos, with white pebble
beach. There are a couple of Hotels and tavernas.

Assos,
|
|
a supremely picturesque place, is well known for panoramic views, a venetian castle
and a good sandy beach. There are a few rooms to rent and a couple of
tavernas.

Fiscardo,
|
|
(54 Km northeast of Argostoli) is the only town in Kefalonia not to have
been devastated by the earthquake in 1953. Fiscardo is a pretty and quiet
town with Venetian houses to be situated around a beautiful harbour. There
a few pensions and a couple of self contained apartments to rent.

Kato Katelios,

|
is a small resort, with springs and a long sandy beach along Mounda Bay.
There are a few tavernas and a few rooms to let.

Lixouri,
(Kefalonia's second city)
|
|
is a quiet and friendly city. It is surrounded by mountains
and built around a port. The harbour area is alive with boats and motors
departing to Argostoli. Lixouri is the capital of Paliki peninsula which
is the most intensively cultivated part of Kefalonia.Lixouri was knocked
by the destructive earthquake of 1953 and was rebuild with wide streets.
The library and the icon museum is located on the coastal side in an old
mansion which was survived the earthquake.
Outside Lixouri is the beach Lepeda and only 9Km away is the famous red
sandy beach Xi. South of Lixouri (20 minutes) there is a series of sand
and seaweed beaches. Further south (90 minutes walk from Lixouri) is St
George Cape (Agios Georgios) and around that an excellent stretch of sand.

Myrtos
|

is a spectacular beach of fine white sand. Facilities are limited to a beach bar, sun beds
and umbrellas.

|
covers 2Km of coast with turquoise waters and is rapidly developing as a resort.
It is a beautiful picturesque village surrounded by the villages of Tzanata, Asprogerakas, Kabitsata and Riza.
The area is renowned as a fishing place, while its caves are a shetler for the seal Monachus - Monachus and Caretta - Caretta.
Poros has direct ferry links with Kilini in Peloponnese.

Sami
(the port for links with Italy, Patras and Corfu)

|
The closest attractive beach is a 1 Km away towards Karavomilos
with sand. Close to Sami there are some excellent grottoes such as the
Drogarati cave (close to Haliotata village) and the Lake Melissani.
Dragarati cave has orange and yellow stalactites and stalagmites. One
of its chambers has such fine acoustics that Maria Callas came there to
sing. Melissani is a steep-sided cave where its salt waters fed by the
stream that disappears underground at argostoli. The blue and purple colour
of the water (effect of the sun filtering through a hole in the roof)
and the reflections are spectacular.

Scala
|
|
has a long beach with pine shade at the back of the beach. Near Scala, a Roman villa
was excavated with 2nd century AD mosaic floors. Close to scala (2Km)
a 7th century BC team of Apollo has been discovered. There is couple
of small hotels.
