Nissyros according to the mythology, is the stone that sea god Poseidon (Neptune) picked up from Kos island and throw it to Titan Polyvotis.

Apart of all that Nissyros is small volcanic island, yet untouched by tourism but popular with day trippers from Kos. It has very few beaches but its distinct wild beauty offers stunning views and remarkable walks.

Mandraki - The port and capital
Mandraki

the capital and the port of the island is a very attractive town with picturesque whitewashed houses and two castles. Palaiokastro is the oldest (4th century BC) with Cyclopean wall and ruins from the ancient Acropolis and the Venetian Castle of Styliani which was built in 1315 by the knights of St. John. In the castle is the Late Byzantine Monastery of Panagia Spiliani (built in 1600) with some excellent icons and a library. The views from the monastery are fantastic. In Mandraki there is a Popular Museum with island exhibits.
The nearest beach in the town is Hochlakia with black volcanic pebbles.

Emborios (8 Km from Mandraki)

a crater rim village with very few inhabitants has some excellent views of the internal crater. In Emborio there is the monastery of Panagia Kyra and the ruins from a byzantine fortress.

Nikia

another volcanic crater rim village, is beautiful and lively with stunning views over the crater and the sea. The square of the village is paved with hochlakia forming a lovely mosaic. A path from Nikia leads to the crater floor where the sulphur smell is quiet strong. Close to the village, the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos has nice frescoes and icons.

Pali (4 Km from Mandraki)

is a pretty fishing village with a picturesque harbour. There is an hotel, rooms to let and tavernas. Not far away from Pali are the best beaches of the island, the grey sand Lies, the reddish Pahia Ammos and the white sand White Beach.
