Getting There -
There daily ferry connections
with Piraeus, Milos, Serifos and Kythnos. Less frequently is connected with
Paros, Kimolos, Ios, Santorini, Sikinos, Folegandros and once a week with
Rhodes, Crete, Karpathos, Kassos, Symi.

Getting Around
- There is
bus service between Kamares, Apollonia and Artemonas. The bus network
is also extended to Platis Yialos, Kastro and Pharos. There are also
boats from Kamares to Vathy. Motor bike, car and jeep rental is available.

Nightlife -
There are several beachside cocktail bars and discos. Nightlife is
consternated in Kamares which is the livest spot of the island.

Excursions, Places of
Interest -
Panagia Chrissopigi, the island's most famous monastery, is built
on a rocky promontory. Kastro, Sifnos' old capital (today with 100
inhabitants) built on a rocky outcrop, with beautiful churches. Vathi the
best beach of the island.

Apollonia
|
|
Sifnos' capital derived its name from
a 7th century BC temple of Apollo which was superseded in the 18th century
by the church of Panagia Ouranofora. Apollonia a collection of
three hilltop villages, is a beautiful town harmonically spread across the
hills. It is scenic in parts with white buildings, flower balconies and
lovely views. The Museum of Popular Arts and Folklore exhibits a
collection of Sifniot pottery, costumes and textiles. Fragments of a famous
local book are also in display. Agios Athanassios Church with frescoes
and wooden iconostasis is worth a visit. All tourist amenities are available
in Apollonia.

Artemonas, (2 km from Apollonia)

is even
nicer than Apollonia with wonderful views and elegant Venetian houses and
beautiful churches. Panagia Gouria with frescoes and Agios Georgios
with fine icons should be visited.

Kamares, (6 km from Apollonia)
|
|
the port is
positioned in an amphitheatre of massive mountains. It is a cheerful place
with lively nightlife. Kamares has a sandy beach and a couple of potteries.

Kastro, (3 Km from Apollonia),

|
Sifnos' capital
from the 14th to the 19th century, retains some of its medieval character.
It is built on a rocky outcrop with an almost sheer drop to the sea on three
sides. There are Venetian coats of arms and ancient wall fragments in some
of the older dwellings. There is also a small Archaeological Museum
which exhibits a collection of Archaic and Hellenistic sculpture of ceramics
to the Byzantine era. Churches with beautiful floors such as Panagia
Eleoussa and Agia Ekaterini are worth a visit. Kastro has a
couple of tavernas.

Panagia Chrissopigi
|
|
was build
in 1650 on a rocky promontory after an icon of the Virgin was found in the
sea by two fishermen attracted by the light it emitted. Panagia Chrissopigi
is split off from the mainland and connected to it by a bridge. A sandy
track leads to a beautiful sandy beach with a taverna.

Pharos
|
|
is a little hamlet situated around a
small sandy beach with a few tavernas and rooms to let. Apokofto
is a nearby lovely golden sandy beach with a small pension.

Platis Yialos, (10 km from Apollonia)
|
|
is Sifnos' busiest resort with sandy beach and water sports, tavernas, hotels,
rooms to let and a pottery.monastery which is situated on hill.

|
Vathy
|
|
a fishing and pottery village, is an excellent
sheltered horseshoe bay surrounded by tall hills and is accessible by rough
track from Apollonia and Platis Yialos, or by boat from Kamares. There is
a pottery, a couple of tavernas and a few rooms to let.
